WHY JOIN TACS?

The Texas Association of Community Schools (TACS) represents school districts with no more than one high school. This means that our membership comprises the small, mid-sized and rural school districts in Texas. The following services and benefits are offered to TACS membership of more than 700 school districts.

WHO IS TACS?

TACS represents those districts that have no more than one high school. Our membership comprises the small, mid-sized and rural school districts in Texas. Through legislative activities, TACS is the voice of the single high school community in Texas.

 

 

 

TACS EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

The Executive Committee consists of elected representatives:

Four (4) Officers: President, President-Elect, Vice President, and immediate Past President; One (1) Director from each Education Service Center Region (20); and the Legislative Chairperson (1) appointed by the President. 

 

STANDING COMMITTEES

The association has several standing committees comprising representatives from member schools.  These are:  Legislative, Membership, Audit, Budget, 6-8 Grade Advisory, Long Range Planning, U.I.L. Advisory, Honorary Life Membership and Student Scholarships.

 

WHO QUALIFIES FOR MEMBERSHIP?

A community school is defined as a school district having no more than one high school in the district.

 

Institutional Members are community school districts or Education Service Centers.  Institutional Membership dues are based on average daily attendance.

 

Associate Members are individuals/businesses who are interested in preserving quality education through the community school concept.  Associate Members shall have all rights and privileges of the Association except, the right to vote and to hold office.  

 

Affiliate Members are educators of groups of educators wishing to pursue similar public school interests.

 

Honorary Life Members are chosen by a vote of the Executive Committee in recognition of distinguished service to community schools.  All nominees shall be screened and recommended by a special committee appointed by the President.

  

WHAT HAS TACS DONE FOR YOU?

  • Successfully lobbied for and defended the Small/Sparse Formula since its inception
  • Successfully defeated efforts to force consolidation on school districts
  • Supported the mid-sized school finance formula
  • Has continuously promoted facilities’ legislation that favored small school district in both the 74th and 75th Legislative Sessions
  • Helped pass HB 2128, the Telecommunications Infrastructure Bill in the 74th Legislature and SB 249 and HB 98 in the 75th Legislature, which together provided 1.6 billion dollars to develop a telecommunications infrastructure for the schools of Texas
  • Worked effectively with other school groups to defeat school vouchers
  • Monitors all meetings of the State Board of Education
  • Supported and defended the current structure of the U.I.L.
  • Represents TACS’ membership on the Coalition to Invest in Texas Schools
  • Provide unique Professional Development Opportunities through regional conferences
  • Provide Professional Liability Insurance for member school districts and their employees at a reduced rate

 

HOW DO I JOIN TACS?

Institutional Membership dues are based on Average Daily Attendance (ADA) of the District. Find the ADA group that identifies your school and remit your check for the corresponding dues.
